FLORIAN BARBAZ
PhD student at ULIEGE and RUG
About me
I graduated with a Master in Molecular and Supramolecular (2023) from the University of Strasbourg, France. I also obtained an Engineering Degree (2023) from the European School of Chemistry, Polymers and Material sciences, with the Organic Chemistry specialty. I did my Master’s thesis at the Universidad Federal de Santa Catarina, Brazil, in the MESOLab (Laboratory of Methodology and Organic Synthesis) working on new synthesis methods of biologically relevant substances through functionalized diazo compounds.
I did a 5 months Research Internship (2022) at SINTEF Industry laboratory in Trondheim, Norway. I worked on the biopolymer modification to make environmentally benign flocculants for microplastics removal from sea water. I spent also one month at LIMA (Molecular Innovation and Application Laboratory, CNRS), Strasbourg, France. The aim of that project was the synthesis of dendritic polyaromatic phenantroline ligands.
Acutely aware of our environmental challenges, I would like to use the field I am passionate about (chemistry) to act and remediate such issues. I would like chemistry, which is a source of pollution as much as a source for solutions, to become greener and more sustainable. In my opinion, continuous flow chemistry, is one of the best ways to revolutionize the future of chemical industry, providing alternatives to the traditional synthetic pathways.
I am delighted to join the lab of Prof. Jean-Christophe Monbaliu at the University of Liège and the lab of Prof. Paolo Pescarmona at the University of Groningen, as a PhD student. During my PhD I will work on the continuous flow strategies for the carbonation of bio-based polyols.
